Dr. Toolan was raised in New Jersey and Connecticut. She loved growing up around horses, dogs, and cats. Dr. Toolan received her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University and her VMD from University of Pennsylvania. She completed an internship at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists then continued her career in general practice. When not at work, Dr. Toolan spends time with her family and two dogs. Dr. Toolan is excited to join the team at Southern Rhode Island Animal Hospital!
Over the summer I went shopping to replace my watchband (Saltzman’s Watches) and to replace my shoes (Yorker’s Shoes).
My watchband and my shoes had to be ordered and shipped, so while I was there and since I’d already driven, like a true Rhode Islander, all the way to Cranston, I asked if there were any restaurants or bakeries that I shouldn’t miss while I was in the area.
I was directed to the Original Italian Bakery in Cranston by St Rocco’s Church.
I bought pizza dough and pistachio cookies. They were SO GOOD and when I said this was my first time at the bakery they threw in a bag of pizza wheels. I’ve added this place to my list of local independent businesses.
I am already a repeat customer!
The butterball cookies are also excellent.
Rhode Islanders have been hearing frequent news reports about animals testing positive for rabies in heavily populated areas. While we are seeing an increase here in the Ocean State, there are steps you can take to protect yourself. Don’t Touch Raccoons…and Other Rabies Prevention Tips
I learned some things by listening, like that rabies doesn’t live very long in saliva. Once it is dry and hours old you aren’t going to be considered exposed, but if you touch your dog or cat right after they have recently played with/killed a skunk or raccoon you could be considered exposed. Rabies is nearly 100% fatal (see the podcast below) so we don’t fool around with prevention or post exposure prophylaxis.

I thought I would share part of a letter I wrote to a friend expressing my idea of the divine and how to access it. I wrote, “Both yoga and breathing exercises are getting in touch with god. They are ways to tune in and listen. These are things that make you come alive inside. There are many ways to do this: art, literature, walks, talks with friends, being in nature. They are times to listen to the “still small feminine voice “ which for me is god. Slowing down long enough to ask myself what the most loving thing I could do in this situation – all things considered – is, and then… actually doing that thing. I fail at this over and over and over. I think knowing there is a source to tune into – even if we can’t access it – even if we access it through one another- is helpful particularly if the source isn’t male, patriarchal, throwing thunderbolts, etc.”
