SRIAH Newsletter, December 2025

December 4, 2025

Today is the full moon.

Give your monthly preventatives!

Note: If you have another way to remember to give your preventatives, that’s okay too! Do what works for you. I thought it might be fun for us to all give it together.

We do a great job helping pets! Help us help people!

We are a drop off point for AMOS HOUSE gifts for children again this year.

Toy donations received will go directly to AMOS HOUSE Family Shelter to their Mother-child Reunification Program for distribution to the kids in those programs.

For donations, these guidelines apply:

  • Toys or clothing can be for any age, infant through 16 years
  • Toys and clothing should be new and unwrapped

Alternatively, you can write a check to AMOS HOUSE. Gift cards are also accepted.

Have your gifts or checks dropped off here at the animal hospital by December 17!

My late dog Pickle in front of our Christmas tree in 2017. She is the mom of my daughter’s dog Winnie that we have now.

The weekend before Thanksgiving, I attended the Thanksgiving Cluster dog show at the Eastern States Exposition. It is a dog-palooza! One of my clients introduced me to the term “busman’s holiday.” It’s when you just can’t get enough of what you do. Since I don’t get to see enough dogs during the week, I need to go and visit them on the weekends. The show happens every year right around Thanksgiving. There are multiple rings with conformation classes going on for different breeds at the same time and a whole building of agility trials. You can talk to breeders of any dog breed you might be interested in and be surrounded by folks in every direction who LOVE dogs! I have a Havanese and my daughter has a Whippet and we got to meet and greet both of our dogs’ breeders at the show. There is a “Holiday Classic” dog show at Eastern States Exposition this weekend, December 6 and 7, 8 am to 5 pm, that will be similar to the Thanksgiving show but all dressed up with Christmas decor. I don’t know if I can fit it into my activities but I am considering it!

Three new friends I met at the Thanksgiving Cluster!

If you prefer to adopt, there are many in need of homes and rehoming. When I was still in veterinary school I had two female dogs of about the same weight and size and needed to place one of them because they couldn’t decide who was in charge (clearly it was not me!) and they kept fighting with each other. It’s heartbreaking when this happens and it is a fairly common situation.

  1. Here is a link to veterinary behavioral protocols: https://belleplainevet.com/behavioral-protocols/ These protocols include advice on interdog aggression and on a host of other dog and cat behavioral issues.
  2. Here is a link to a behavioral veterinarian located in Stafford, Connecticut to whom we make referrals: https://vetbehavior.com/.

Reach out to us with any behavioral questions. Sometimes behavioral medications can help dogs with their behavioral issues/anxiety and this is something we can often discuss and prescribe through our office.

We will be helping to sponsor the annual New Years Day Polar Plunge again this upcoming year! This event is hosted by the Rhode Island Center Assisting those in Need (RICAN).

RICAN Food Pantry is a vital community resource that offers weekly emergency food programs, along with many other services. If you would like to participate, the event will take place on Wednesday, January 1st 2026 at Charlestown Town Beach. More information about the event can be found at the link below.

It’s gingerbread season!
